The Rugs We See From Rancho Santa Fe

Leslie put it plainly: finding a team that actually knows fine rugs is hard. Many owners here will not hand their oriental rugs to anyone else. Inherited Persian pieces like these often arrive decades old and never washed, and some need the repair bench before they see water. These are the rugs a family means to keep, and they are worth doing by hand. Many of them live in Covenant homes that go back to Lilian Rice’s 1920s village plan, houses old enough that the rug is not the oldest thing in the room.

Big Rugs, Dry Air, and Fire Season

Rancho Santa Fe sits higher and further inland than the beach towns, so days run hotter and nights cooler here than they do in Del Mar down the hill. That dry air spares rugs the coastal damp, but it carries fine dust that packs deep into the pile of a hand-knotted piece. And the eucalyptus groves the Santa Fe Railway planted in 1906 for railroad ties still cover the Ranch, shedding bark and leaf litter that crosses the doormat all year.

Fire is part of this town’s memory too. The Witch Fire came through in 2007 and damaged or destroyed more than 80 homes here, and every dry fall since has left some ash on the Ranch. It settles quietly into rug pile and is easy to overlook until the rug is moved.

The eucalyptus adds its own layer. The groves the Santa Fe Railway planted in 1906 were meant to become railroad ties and never did, but the canopy stayed, and it sheds bark ribbons and leaf litter through every dry month of the year. Under the trees, that litter breaks down into a fine debris that crosses the doormat on shoes and paws and settles into whichever rug sits nearest the door.

Oversized rugs and estate-room sun

Bigger homes also mean bigger rugs than most cleaners can wash in-house. Our facility is set up to clean and dry oversize rugs laid flat, without the creasing or color bleed that comes from folding a large rug through a small operation.

Sun finishes the picture. Estate rooms with tall south and west glass give a rug decades of afternoon light, and dry inland heat speeds what the sun starts, so the reds and blues of an old Persian can go quiet at one end of the rug while the shaded end stays deep. A rug that looks fine in place can surprise its owner the first time it is rolled up and seen edge to edge.

Getting Your Rug To Us

You do not have to move it, and you do not have to fit a large rug in your car. From our shop on Ronson Road in Kearny Mesa, we take Interstate 15 north to Via de la Valle or Del Dios Highway into the Ranch, about a 25-minute drive. We pick up and deliver across the Covenant, Fairbanks Ranch, and Del Rayo, and we bring the equipment to move oversize rugs.

Access is part of the plan on Ranch pickups. Covenant streets are simple, while Fairbanks Ranch and Del Rayo runs usually pass a gatehouse, so leave our name with the gate when you book and the crew takes it from there. Oversize pieces ride flat in the truck in both directions, never folded, whichever way we come in, Via de la Valle or Del Dios Highway. The 25 minute run up Interstate 15 also makes it easy to time the return to a day you are home.

Large room size pieces common in Rancho Santa Fe homes are no problem, since we have the space and the drying racks for oversized rugs at our San Diego facility. If your rug also has fire season smoke or ash settled into it, the full immersion wash flushes that out of the foundation. I had a truly great experience with Zeytounian Rug Cleaning. We just moved here and I had intended to have my 6 rugs cleaned before we moved but never got around to it. I had already gotten a couple of estimates in our previous area, so I knew what to expect. Here in a new town, I contacted three different companies to try and get estimates. The family heirloom passed down from my grandfather. Prayer rug size, losing threads, and quite filthy.. After restoration and washing at their own shop. A Full emersion process in their shop.
