The short version: Hand rug repair in San Diego since 1956, from fringe and binding to full reweaving, with a free written estimate first.

  • Is my rug worth repairing? Usually yes. Hand knotted rugs are built to be repaired, and we give you an honest read before any work starts.
  • Can moth damage really be rewoven? Yes. We rebuild the foundation, reknot the pile to match, and treat the rug so the infestation does not come back.
  • Will the repair be visible? The goal is a repair that reads as part of the rug. We match fiber, color, knot count and pile direction.
  • How long will a repair take? Binding and fringe work moves faster than reweaving. You get a realistic timeframe with the estimate.

Rug Repair in San Diego, Done by Hand Since 1956

Zeytounian Rugs repairs area and Oriental rugs in San Diego by hand: fringe and edge binding, reweaving holes, moth damage, and full restoration. Our family has rebuilt rugs since 1956, matching wool and dye to the original weave, with pickup and delivery across San Diego County.

Rug repair in San Diego is often treated as a last resort, something you weigh only after a rug has frayed at the ends or lost a patch to moths. At Zeytounian Rugs it is the work the family was built on. Nicholas Zeytounian brought the trade to San Diego, and his sons Anthony and Alexander now run the bench as the third generation, restoring rugs by hand the way the family has for close to seventy years.

Damage takes many forms, and each one has its own fix. We reset unraveling ends and rebuild worn fringe, re-secure and rebuild edge binding, reweave holes and thin spots knot by knot, treat and repair moth damage, rebuild the foundation and selvage that hold a rug together, correct dye run from old water damage, and carry out full restoration on antique pieces that have earned it. Every step happens by hand at our Kearny Mesa workshop.

Reading the rug before we repair it

Before any needle touches your rug, we read it. We look at how it was made, the fiber in the pile and the foundation, the knot count, and whether the dyes are stable. That reading tells us which repair the rug actually needs and what a strong result will look like, so the advice you get is honest rather than optimistic.

We also weigh what a rug is worth to you. A production wool rug and an inherited Persian piece may show the same tear yet deserve very different decisions, and we talk that through before we start. Pickup and delivery covers the county, and every estimate is free. For anyone still comparing shops, our guide on how to choose a rug repair service covers the questions worth asking, us included.

Museum Quality Workmanship

Our weavers repair a wide range of rugs by hand, including Persian, Turkish, Indian, Afghan, Moroccan, kilim, silk, and wool. Because we understand how each of these is constructed, we can match the repair method to the specific rug in front of us and explain the options in plain terms before any work begins.

  • Re-fringe: new fringe attached and sewn on by hand
  • Chain stitch: locks the ends so the rug stops unraveling
  • Reweaving: holes, worn spots, and moth damage rebuilt knot by knot
  • Rug binding: loose, frayed, or missing edges rebuilt
  • Moth damage treatment and repair
  • Patching and foundation repair

Fringe & Ends

The life of your rug can be extended!

The fringe does real structural work. It is the visible end of the warp threads that run the length of the rug, so when the fringe goes, the body of the rug is next. Once the ends start to unravel, knots at the edge begin to slip and the rug loses length row by row. We stop that loss with chain stitching, a hand technique that locks the end and holds the remaining foundation in place. From there we can rebuild worn fringe or attach new fringe so the ends match the rest of the piece. This kind of rug fringe repair is one of the most common jobs we see, and catching it early saves far more of the original weave.

Rug Bindings

The binding is the wrapped yarn that seals the long sides of a rug and keeps the edge from splitting open. When it wears through, the selvage underneath frays and the rug starts to come apart at the damage. We rebuild rug binding by hand and can wrap the edge in the weight you prefer, from a single line to a heavier, more protective finish:

  • Single Edge Weaving
  • Double Edge Weaving
  • Triple Edge Weaving
  • Quadruple Edge Weaving

Reweaving Damaged Areas

Reweaving is the closest thing to turning back the clock. We rebuild the missing foundation first, then knot new wool or silk into the gap, matching color, knot count, and pile direction so the repaired area sits level with the field around it. It is slow, exacting work, and it is how a moth hole or a worn-through patch disappears back into the pattern. Common cases include:

  • Rugs Damaged by Moths
  • Worn Spot Rug Damage
  • Rug Holes with no foundation
  • Holes with patch work
Rug Repair Options at a Glance
Repair What it fixes When to choose it
Fringe repair and chain stitch Unraveling ends and worn or missing fringe. Chain stitching locks the end by hand, then fringe is rebuilt or new fringe sewn on. The ends have started to unravel or the rug is losing length row by row. Catching it early saves more of the original weave.
Edge binding Loose, frayed, or missing edges along the long sides. The wrapped yarn is rebuilt by hand, from single to quadruple edge weaving. The binding has worn through and the selvage underneath is starting to fray or split open.
Reweaving Moth holes, worn spots, and holes with no foundation. The foundation is rebuilt first, then new wool or silk is knotted in to match color, knot count, and pile direction. The damage reaches into the body of the rug and you want it to disappear back into the pattern.

Why choose Zeytounian Rugs for Rug Repair in San Diego?

Choosing who repairs your rug matters as much as choosing to repair it at all. A rushed repair can pull the surrounding weave out of tension, drop a rug’s value, or leave a ridge or color mismatch you notice every time you walk past it. Seventy years on the same bench have taught us to repair in a way that holds and that respects the hand of the original weaver.

We handle oriental rug repair in San Diego along with area rug repair for machine made and synthetic pieces, and the same care applies to both. We serve La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, Coronado, and communities across the county. Pickup and delivery means you never have to fold a large or fragile rug into a car or risk more damage in transit. We collect it, repair it, and return it to you. If your rug needs a wash as well as repair work, our rug cleaning and repair service handles both in one visit.

Whether your rug needs a small fringe repair or full structural rebuilding, you get an honest evaluation and a clear recommendation first. Zeytounian Rugs has been San Diego’s trusted rug cleaning and repair specialist since 1956, and rug restoration of antique and heirloom pieces is where three generations of practice show most. We treat every rug that comes through the door with the care we would give our own.

“The family heirloom passed down from my grandfather. Prayer rug size, losing threads, and quite filthy… The rug came back with 100% satisfaction.”

Rug Repair Questions, Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Most rugs are, even ones that look past saving. Hand-knotted rugs in particular are built to be repaired, and the foundation is usually sound long after the pile or the edges wear out. We give you an honest read at the free estimate, including the rare case when a repair is not worth doing.

Yes. Moths eat wool down to the foundation, but as long as we can anchor to sound warp and weft around the hole, we rebuild the foundation and reknot the pile to match. We also treat the rug so the infestation does not come back.

On hand work the goal is a repair that reads as part of the rug. We match fiber, color, knot count, and pile direction. On an antique with faded, uneven dyes an exact match takes more effort, and we tell you honestly what to expect before we begin.

We do. Fringe, binding, and edge work apply to area rugs and machine made pieces as well as hand-knotted Persian and oriental rugs. The right method depends on how the rug is built, which is why we inspect it first.

It depends on the type and extent of the damage. A binding or fringe job moves faster than reweaving a large hole or restoring an antique. We give you a realistic timeframe with your free estimate so you are not left guessing.

No. Pickup and delivery covers San Diego County. We collect the rug, complete the repair at our Kearny Mesa workshop, and bring it back to you.

These guys are awesome! They’re the only group we found that does home pickup and delivery, although we ended up taking advantage of a discount to drop them off ourselves. We have two big area rugs that had never been professionally cleaned before, and our home carpet cleaner just wasn’t making a difference any more. One of them is shag and was flattened down and full of years of tracked in dirt, and in addition to the cleaning they restored some life into the pile. The other one is regular polyester but huge and full of reminders of two puppies’ worth potty training accidents, that we just couldn't get the smell of out no matter what we did. Zeytounian actually sent that one through multiple extra rounds of their cleaning process to fully extract everything at no additional cost. FINALLY we won’t have to worry that our house smells like dog pee whenever we have guests! Absolutely grateful to them and highly recommend their service!

Let me add my recommendation for Zeyrtounian Rug Cleaning to the list of happy customers . Zeyrtounian brothers were recommended by the couple Wiazi who repaired a very old and in poor shape Turkish rug (they did an amazing job) that has been in the family for almost 100 years. Zeyrtounian brothers brought the rug back to life. They gave me a great deal and completed the cleaning in a timely manner. They are both very friendly and want their customers satisfied. Highly recommended. James

I can't enough about the brothers that own this business. Alex and Anthony are 3rd generation rug sellers, cleaners and offer repair services. Their knowledge of the various rugs is extensive. The business itself is a vast improvement over the prior vendor who serviced my rugs. They have a 9-step process for cleaning the rugs and the drying system ensures a good, dry, flat rug, without any evidence of trapped mildew or moisture. I have a lot of pets, my rug came home from the cleaning looking almost new. I've referred friends and neighbors, who want to maintain and preserve their Persian, Turkish, Afghani rugs to Zeytounian. Everything about the business it top of the line.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for this incredible review, Linda! It truly means a lot to both of us that you recognize the care, knowledge, and attention to detail we put into our work. As a third-generation family business, we take great pride in continuing our family's tradition of caring for fine rugs. We're so happy to hear how pleased you are with the results! Your trust in us and your referrals to friends and neighbors mean more than you know. Thank you again for your continued support, and we look forward to caring for your rugs for many years to come!

It was a medium wool area rug that needed cleaning as well as a repair in one of the corners. It’s an old repair that was unraveling and eaten by dry rot. Anthony and his crew were very upfront about what they can and can’t do, but it certainly exceeded my expectations. The rug looks beautiful. Thank you.

Response from the owner:Thank you so much for the wonderful review, Shinar! We're thrilled to hear that both the cleaning and corner repair exceeded your expectations. It means a lot to us that you trusted us with your rug, and we're so happy to hear how beautiful it turned out. Thank you again for your support, and we look forward to helping you in the future!

Brought in an Egyptian layer weave cotton rug to be treated prior to installation. The facility is run by the Zeytounian brothers, very friendly service and with suggestions for the care of the rug. I also purchased their recommended rug padding. They were helpful in unloading the loading the rug in my RAV4. Strongly recommend, no issues with the rug, it was beautiful. Photo attached. Any marks on the rug are from 3 and 5 year old grandchildren playing on it!!

We're glad we could offer some helpful care recommendations and get you set up with the proper rug padding to protect it for years to come. We love hearing that your grandchildren are already enjoying it! After all, rugs are meant to be lived on and enjoyed. We truly appreciate your trust in us and your recommendation. Thank you again for supporting our family business!

I took our rug to Zeytounuan Rugs for cleaning after watching their short video. The rug is gold and ivory, and one foot on either side of the rug was dark brown from dirt. When I left it with Anthony I was hopeful that I may see some color where the walking paths were. Eight days after leaving the rug Anthony called to say the rug was ready for collection. I took it home and opened what looked like a new rug! The colors were bright and it is so, so very clean. You could never tell the rug is 20 years old. So happy!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Stewart. Twenty years of foot traffic on gold and ivory is about the hardest thing anyone hands us, so getting the colour back out of it was satisfying on our end too. Glad the video brought you in, and Anthony will be pleased.

Zeytounian Rug Cleaning and Repair have been my go to rug cleaners for the past 25 years. Kind, courteous, timely and through. My rugs are beautiful and will last forever with the care the Zeytounian family gives them. Call them now!?♥️♥️♥️
Response from the owner:Thank you, Marcia. Twenty five years of rugs between us is something we don't take lightly. Looking after them so they outlast all of us is the whole idea. We appreciate you saying so.

Loved working with them. Not only did our rugs come back beautiful and clean, they taught us more about the history of the carpets. Ours was likely woven by two women over 100 years ago in Persia. They say it took them two years. I feel more connected to these women.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Sarah. Reading where a rug came from is half the pleasure of this work, and a piece like yours carries a lot of hours in it. Glad it came back clean and that you know a little more about it now. We appreciate you taking the time.

Zeytounian Rugs did a great job repairing and cleaning a Turkish rug I’ve had since I was a teenager. The corner has been chewed and damaged by my dog many years ago, but they fixed it right up. After the repair and a clean it looks like new, I’m so pleased. The guys are super friendly and knowledgeable, just a pleasure to work with.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Adam. A chewed corner on a rug you've had that long is worth repairing properly rather than hiding, and Turkish weaves take the repair well. Glad it looks like new again.

Friendly, professional, hardworking brothers. Had two chinese ivory wool rugs cleaned. One large one smaller. One with a few spots i did not think they could get out, but they did. Very pleased. Would highly recommend them.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Reid. Ivory wool is unforgiving, so spots on it are the ones people assume are permanent. Glad we could prove otherwise on both. We appreciate the recommendation.
